Wooden grid with evenly spaced square cutouts on a white background.

Until today, acoustic metasurfaces have been stuck in two-dimensional planes. The "Curved surfaces" project brought together scientists from the University of Sussex, Metasonixx, with designers from Kivi Studio to create the first curved acoustic metasurfaces.

Applications explored: MRI machines and heat pumps.

First seen: UK Construction Week 2023
Funded by the UK Acoustic Network.

Immersive experiences are usually optimised for visuals, but it is sound that underpins the "feeling of being there". In this project, along with Portal Devices, Owidgets and the University of Sussex, we used 13 suspended speakers to create a virtual multisensory experience.

Applications: transportable immersive experiences.

First seen: Reproduced Sound 2022

Funded by University of Sussex
